The Next Chapter: Mr Green Returns with a New Adventure for George
Following the success of his debut children’s book George Saves the Dragon, Radnor House Sevenoaks teacher Mr Tom Green has released the much-anticipated second instalment in the series: George and the Dragon: The Big Secret.
Building on the foundations of the first story, the new book sees George and his unlikely dragon companion reunited - this time with a secret. No longer just acquaintances, the pair have formed a close friendship and, under the cover of darkness, embark on a series of heroic adventures, helping those in danger while the rest of the town remains unaware. However, as rumours begin to spread, their secret life starts to unravel, leading to unexpected consequences.
The book also continues Mr Green’s creative partnership with his father, Richard Green, whose illustrations once again bring the story to life. Reflecting on his writing process, Mr Green explains that while the playful rhyme and rhythm remain at the heart of the series, his confidence has grown, allowing the story to develop with more action and energy. With an established working relationship, collaboration has become more intuitive, built on a shared understanding of how words and illustrations complement one another. “There’s a real trust in the process now,” he adds. “I can picture how the illustrations will look as I’m writing, and my dad instinctively knows how to bring those ideas to life.”
Since its release, The Big Secret has already received positive feedback, particularly from readers who enjoyed the first book and were eager to follow George’s next adventure. The continuation of the story allows young readers to deepen their connection with the characters, building anticipation for what might come next.
Alongside his work as an author, Mr Green continues to teach at Radnor House, where he is known for his role in the Sports Department. With English as his second subject, he values the opportunity to blend creativity with teaching, often encouraging pupils to explore interests beyond the classroom. His experience as both a teacher and parent has also shaped his perspective on reading, particularly in an increasingly digital world.
“Books offer something different,” he reflects. “They allow children to slow down, engage more deeply, and really connect with language and storytelling. It’s about finding what you enjoy reading and building from there.”
The release of George and the Dragon: The Big Secret comes at a particularly fitting time for the Radnor House Sevenoaks community, as the school celebrates its 10-year anniversary. As part of the celebrations, this week marks Reading Week, with students, staff and parents coming together to take on the ambitious 10,000 Pages Challenge—a shared goal of reading 10,000 pages. Mr Green’s continued success as an author reflects the school’s commitment to fostering a love of reading and storytelling, inspiring pupils to engage with books both inside and beyond the classroom.
Looking ahead, Mr Green has already begun work on a third story in the series, with a festive theme - promising that George’s adventures are far from over.
