From Clifftops to Coastlines: Year 9’s Outdoor Expedition
Year 9 students took part in an exciting and challenging trip as part of their optional subject, Learning in the Outdoors, accredited by Agored Cymru. Designed to combine outdoor education with personal development, the trip proved to be both a physical challenge and a deeply rewarding experience.
The journey began with a two-day assessed expedition, covering an impressive 30 kilometres from Eastbourne to Southease via Alfriston. Along the way, students were treated to the stunning scenery of the Seven Sisters cliffs and the tranquil Cuckmere River, all under the backdrop of unseasonably hot weather that added to the test of endurance. Despite the heat, students showed outstanding resilience, teamwork, and determination, supporting one another every step of the way.
Thursday night was spent camping under the stars, where students cooked their own meals and bonded over the shared experience of life outdoors. On Friday evening, after two days of trekking, the group arrived at a youth hostel, where they were able to rest, reflect, and begin working on their course assignments, building on what they had learned in the field.
The adventure continued Saturday with a change of pace and environment- this time at Brighton Marina, where the focus shifted to water sports. Students took part in both yachting and powerboating sessions, gaining hands-on experience and building confidence on the water. They also learned about equipment maintenance, navigational techniques, and marine safety, completing the second key element of their course.
All students successfully fulfilled two major course units, and this enriching experience not only strengthened their practical skills but also deepened their appreciation for the natural environment, teamwork, and self-reliance. It was a memorable few days filled with challenge and discovery - true to the spirit of outdoor learning.
