Year 8 Adventurers Return After Successful Ashdown Forest Camp
RA group of 56 excited Year 8 students and staff have returned home brimming with stories of resilience, perseverance, and adventure after completing their first residential camp of the year in Ashdown Forest, East Sussex. The camp tested not only their outdoor skills but also their teamwork, problem-solving, and independence over a two-day expedition.
The adventure kicked off with students navigating their way to the base camp using map-reading skills, starting from different drop-off points across the scenic Ashdown Forest. Battling through rain and muddy conditions, the students trekked an average of 12 kilometres over five hours, making the challenging journey through the countryside a true test of stamina and determination.
Upon arriving at the base camp, the students set up their own tents and cooked their dinners using Trangia camping stoves, showcasing their newly acquired self-sufficiency. Despite the damp weather, spirits remained high as the group gathered around a glowing campfire to toast marshmallows and reflect on the day’s accomplishments.
The following day, the students continued to embrace their independence, managing their own food and camp organisation. A rotation of exciting activities — including Tomahawk throwing, tunnelling, crate stacking, and the gauntlet — provided further opportunities for personal growth. Each challenge encouraged communication, teamwork, and courage as the students pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones.
The two-day camp was a memorable start to the Year 8 outdoor program, helping the students build not just survival skills but also confidence, camaraderie, and a sense of achievement. As they returned home, they did so with lasting memories and stronger bonds with their peers, having conquered both the elements and their own personal challenges.
