Year 6 Rise to the Challenge on Navigation Day

Our Year 6 pupils took part in an exciting Navigation Day, putting the map-reading and navigation skills they have developed throughout the year to the test.

Dropped at an undisclosed location, pupils were immediately challenged to work out exactly where they were before planning and navigating their own route back to school. Using maps to orientate themselves, they identified key landmarks, considered route options and made important decisions about direction and terrain along the way.

This marked an important milestone in their outdoor education journey, as it was their first fully independent navigation exercise without a member of staff accompanying them. While staff monitored progress through a series of checkpoints, pupils were given the responsibility and freedom to take ownership of their journey.

Covering approximately 14 kilometres in warm and sunny conditions, the groups navigated a variety of landscapes, including sections of complex woodland that required careful decision-making, clear communication and effective teamwork.

Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated impressive resilience, determination and independence. They supported one another when faced with challenges, adapted confidently to changing circumstances and remained focused on achieving their goal.

Navigation Day provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to apply their learning in a real-world environment and served as a fitting culmination of the skills they have developed through their outdoor education programme. We are incredibly proud of all they achieved and look forward to seeing them build on these experiences in future expeditions.
