From Classrooms to Careers: Discovery in Work Experience Week
Radnor House was buzzing with enthusiasm and ambition for work experience week. It was a brilliant opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and into the world of work. Some students chose to stay at Radnor House, taking on placements across various departments within the school. Others secured external placements in a wide range of sectors and businesses.
Students who took a placement at school started with a thorough induction and then immersed themselves in a wide variety of roles across the school. From Marketing, Catering, Admin, and the library, to shadowing our dedicated staff in MFL, Humanities, PE, and Outdoor Education, our students saw Radnor House from a whole new perspective. One student even had the chance to interview members of the Finance team to better understand the dynamic and diverse career paths within that sector.
Throughout the week, students took part in a range of exciting projects: creating promotional materials for the library, helping to run the Year 5 Experience Day, supporting in-class learning, and assisting during the adventurous Year 7 camping expedition.
A highlight of the week was Wednesday’s session with Elizabeth Armstrong, a Level 7 Qualified Careers Specialist. She delivered a dynamic workshop on the future of careers, with a particular focus on labour market trends and the importance of personal branding. Students came away with practical knowledge and immediately got to work refining their LinkedIn profiles, enrolling on MOOCs, and uploading reflections to UNIFROG.
A huge thank you goes out to our Prep and Senior School staff, who generously created thoughtful, hands-on timetables and experiences for the students. Your support and inspiration made a lasting impression.
Beyond the school gates, many students secured their own external placements - from family-run businesses to major organisations like the NHS and Lloyds Bank. A special shoutout goes to Alex in Year 12 for earning an impressive spot at the House of Commons, where he gained invaluable insights into political life and law-making. Watch this space - a future MP in the making!
Three of our students were privileged to visit IBM’s Innovation Studio in London, hosted by Patrick Onu, Senior Data & AI Technical Specialist for the UK & Ireland. After a warm corporate welcome and panoramic views of the London Eye, students gained first-hand insight into IBM’s cutting-edge work with organisations like the NHS and NatWest. Highlights included a 4D Wimbledon data experience, a live demo of “Scott” the robot dog used in hazardous environments, and engaging discussions around quantum computing and AI ethics. A huge thank you to Mr Onu for such an inspiring and informative morning - an unforgettable glimpse into the world of future tech.
Others explored professional life through our trusted partner businesses, experiencing roles in architecture, veterinary and surveying. Whether in school or out in the wider working world, every student embraced the opportunity to develop new skills, explore future career options and gain invaluable insight into professional environments.
