Year 12 Investigate Brighton’s Changing Coast and City

Year 12 Geography students swapped the classroom for the coast on a fantastic field trip to Brighton. Blessed with beautiful sunshine, the two-day trip was a brilliant opportunity for students to put their learning into action as they gathered essential research for their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA).

Throughout the trip, students delved into key geographical themes such as Changing Places and Coastal Management, using Brighton as their real-world case study. They explored the city’s vibrant streets, collecting data through a range of fieldwork methods. Some students interviewed local shopkeepers and surveyed visitors to uncover what makes Brighton tick socially and economically. Others investigated the city’s thriving tourism industry, focusing on popular attractions like the iconic Brighton Pier and the bustling seafront.

Another group took a closer look at the changing face of Brighton, studying the effects of gentrification on local communities and weighing up the benefits and challenges of urban transformation. Meanwhile, along the shoreline, students examined how coastal management strategies are protecting Brighton’s beaches and shaping the future of this much-loved seaside destination.

The trip proved to be a valuable and enjoyable learning experience, leaving our Year 12 geographers inspired, motivated, and fully equipped to continue their NEA projects with confidence.  No trip to the seaside would be complete without ice creams on the beach providing the perfect end to a busy fieldwork trip.
