Year 3 and 4 Step Back in Time with Viking Adventure

Our Year 3 and 4 pupils recently enjoyed an unforgettable adventure at Lower Grange Farm in Maidstone, Kent, where history was brought vividly to life through an immersive Viking-themed experience.

Inspired by their classroom learning on the Vikings, the children had the chance to spend the day outdoors, discovering what life might have been like for explorers who set sail centuries ago. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the raft-building challenge. Armed with wooden poles, barrels, and rope, pupils worked in small teams to design and construct rafts that could float on the water. The task called for creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills — qualities the Vikings themselves would have relied upon on their epic voyages.

Alongside raft-building, the children also had the opportunity to learn traditional rope-making techniques and practise tying strong knots, just like those that would have secured Viking longships or fastened valuable cargo. It was both a hands-on history lesson and a chance to develop practical skills that required patience, precision and resilience.

The workshop also gave pupils a chance to explore a timeline of key events in the Tudor era and reflect on how daily life in the past often differed dramatically between boys and girls. These activities sparked thoughtful discussion and provided valuable insights into how social structures shaped life in Viking times.

Throughout the day, our pupils demonstrated curiosity, determination, and an eagerness to embrace every challenge set before them. It was exciting, physical, and sometimes a little muddy - but above all, it was a brilliant way to bring their Viking topic to life outside the classroom.
