Year 1 and 2 Dive into Learning with a 'Fin-tastic' Day Out in Hastings
Year 1 and Year 2 pupils set off on an exciting aquatic adventure as part of their new topic, Deep Down Under. Their destination? The fascinating Blue Reef Aquarium in Hastings - a perfect place to bring ocean learning to life!
From the moment they arrived, the children were full of energy and curiosity, ready to explore the wonders of the deep. Guided by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide, Richard, the classes were taken on a journey through the aquarium’s many themed exhibits. Richard shared fascinating facts about marine life—from the tiniest tropical fish to the impressive rays gliding through the tanks—sparking awe and wonder in the children.
One of the highlights of the visit was walking through the spectacular underwater tunnel. Surrounded by shimmering water and vibrant marine creatures swimming overhead, the children were captivated by the chance to see sea life from an entirely new perspective. Gasps of amazement echoed through the tunnel as they spotted sharks, shoals of colourful fish, and even a sea turtle gracefully making its way past the glass.
But the adventure didn’t stop there! In the jungle-themed room, our pupils showed incredible courage—one of our school’s core values—as they gently stroked and held a real python! The experience was a mixture of excitement and nerves, and we were so proud of how bravely and respectfully the children engaged with this unforgettable encounter.
After a busy morning of exploration, everyone enjoyed a well-deserved lunch before heading out to the seafront. The sunshine added to the cheerful mood as the children strolled along the beach, collecting pebbles to take home as special souvenirs. It was a calm and relaxing end to a day filled with discovery, learning, and fun.
The teachers were incredibly impressed by the children’s enthusiasm, excellent behaviour, and thoughtful questions throughout the trip. Their engagement with the topic and respect for the natural world truly shone through.
What a wonderful and memorable way to kick-start our Deep Down Under topic. We can’t wait to dive even deeper into our learning in the weeks ahead!
