Radnor Young Entrepreneurs Take Their Business to Spitalfields Market
Students from the Radnor House Young Enterprise Club recently enjoyed the exciting opportunity to trade at the famous Spitalfields Market in London.
The team, made up of Year 12 A Level Business students and Year 10 GCSE Business students, has created its own student company this year called Replay. The company’s product is a creative and sustainable design: wall clocks made from upcycled vinyl records. Priced at £10 each, the clocks attracted plenty of interest at the market, with visitors and fellow students commenting on the originality of the idea.
The trading event, organised by Young Enterprise, brought together 20 schools from across the London area, providing students with the chance to experience a real-life marketplace and engage directly with customers.
Throughout the day, students took responsibility for promoting and selling their products, managing stock and handling transactions. As well as being a fun experience, the event helped students develop a range of valuable skills including confidence, communication, organisation, teamwork and enterprise.
Thanks to their efforts, the company has now sold a total of 30 clocks, and the team will soon be sharing information on how members of the Radnor community can purchase one.
The Young Enterprise Company Programme forms an important part of the Radnor House co-curricular offer and is open to both GCSE and A Level Business students. Led by Mr Leddington, Head of Economics and Business, the programme gives students the opportunity to establish and run their own student company, gaining valuable real-world business experience and developing essential employability skills.
Working in teams of around 10–18, students take responsibility for every aspect of running a business. From developing a product or service and managing finances to electing directors, raising share capital and selling to the public, students are involved in every stage of the entrepreneurial process.
The programme runs across the academic year and culminates in local, regional and national competitions. At Radnor House, we are proud to open the programme to both GCSE and A Level students, allowing pupils of different ages to collaborate, learn from one another and build experience that can be passed on to future participants.
Alongside developing key skills such as communication, financial awareness, IT literacy, teamwork and enterprise, the programme is also great fun and encourages students to tackle real-world challenges. Participation can also contribute towards the Skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and provides valuable experience that students can draw upon in future CVs and university applications.
Experiences such as the Spitalfields Market event allow students to apply their business knowledge in a practical setting. For our Year 10 students in particular, the day provided inspiration and ideas that may form the basis of next year’s venture, helping to nurture a lifelong entrepreneurial spirit.
