Year 4 Navigate Their Way Through History in Westerham
Year 4 swapped the classroom for compasses on a fantastic day of exploration in the historic town of Westerham. With maps in hand and a sense of adventure in their stride, pupils embraced the challenge of navigating the town to uncover hidden checkpoints - each revealing either a tricky puzzle or an intriguing local fact.
Using key orienteering techniques, such as identifying cardinal directions and following “handrails” like paths, fences, and streams, pupils worked in small teams to chart the most efficient routes between checkpoints. Their determination, collaboration, and problem-solving skills were on full display as pupils explored the area with growing confidence.
Each checkpoint offered something new: from uncovering stories of Westerham’s most famous residents to puzzling out navigation challenges, the children were immersed in a real-world learning experience that brought geography and local history to life.
As well as sharpening their map-reading and orientation skills, Year 4 gained a deeper appreciation of their local area, proving that learning doesn’t always have to happen within four walls. A memorable day all round - Year 4’s day in Westerham was a resounding success.
