French is taught throughout the Prep School from Nursery upwards by a specialist teacher.
The emphasis is on making language learning fun and developing confident language learners, at ease communicating in another language.
In the Lower Prep the scheme of work for Years 1 and 2 is based on six story books.
In the Upper Prep we use a variety of resources to cover a range of topics such as food, transport and pets. We also provide many opportunities to develop intercultural understanding, for example through celebrating important dates in the French calendar and food tasting. The course also includes other aspects of the primary curriculum and incorporates all the statutory requirements for language learning at Key Stage 2.
Both courses provide opportunities for speaking, listening, reading and writing, including role-plays, games, songs, creative activities and worksheets. We also provide formal opportunities for our pupils to perform in French in assembly, by taking part in the French acting club, in addition to role-playing in the classroom.
We have previously run a day trip to the French Institute and the Freshwater Theatre Company also visit the school to deliver interactive MFL storytelling sessions to the Prep School pupils.
