Reception Life

Welcome to Reception

Your child's initial school experience is crucial as they start exploring their world, making new friends, and embarking on exciting adventures. At Radnor House Sevenoaks, we foster a love of learning from the moment your child joins our Reception class, creating an environment full of warmth and joy.

In Reception, our curriculum is rich, engaging, and diverse, with a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy tailored to each child's individual progress. Our carefully planned indoor and outdoor spaces support both adult-led and child-initiated activities, promoting confidence, autonomy, and essential executive functions such as working memory, flexible thinking, and inhibitory control.

Our Reception class has a maximum of 20 pupils to ensure all the children interact with and form relationships with all of their classmates, ensuring that the class is supportive of each other. Small classes also allow our teachers to better know the strengths, areas of development, and needs of each pupil to ensure tailored teaching to match the individual child. Our Reception offering includes specialist teaching in Computer Science, French, Music, Drama, PE, swimming, and Forest School. Additionally, we offer lunchtime clubs like Taekwondo, Ballet, Tennis, and Lego Club.

Literacy

We use a comprehensive phonics program to build fluent readers, confident speakers, and enthusiastic writers. By integrating phonics into comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling, and handwriting, we make learning engaging through partner work and drama. We believe that cultivating a love for reading sparks imagination and fosters a lifelong passion for learning.

Numeracy

Our maths program, based on the Singapore approach, instils confidence in early number skills and a passion for mathematics. It includes exploration of concepts like shape, space, and measurement, helping children build a strong foundation for future success. We aim to nurture happy, resilient mathematicians who appreciate the beauty of maths and take pride in solving complex problems.
