Music

Music plays a very important part in the life of the Prep School. All pupils have the opportunity to learn the violin from an early age and we believe that a sound grounding in music-making through performance, composition and understanding of notation prepares them for a musically-enriched life.

Pre Prep children receive music lessons, tailored to their needs, several times a week. In Nursery and Transition we sing a varied mix of songs to encourage language, pitch, diction and counting. There are a variety of instruments designed for little hands and whilst we do make a great deal of noise we have a marvellous time doing so! In Reception pupils start to use the Music Babies method to link music notation to sound and by the end of Reception all pupils are able to understand basic musical notation.

In Year 1 and Year 2 all receive class violin lessons, taught through the highly-acclaimed String Babies system. All pupils also sing together regularly to prepare for assemblies, concerts and productions and there are regular Musical Soirees during the year that pupils are invited to take part in. As pupils move up the school they also learn recorder and keyboards.

Prep School Pupils also receive an hour of music classes each week. They are taught in our new Performing Arts Suite where they have access to music technology, keyboards and a wide range of instruments and have lessons in composing, performing and listening skills. Year 5 pupils all take part in the Young Voices concert at the O2 in January and pupils in year 6 have an opportunity to join our Senior Choir which undertakes regular overseas tours.

Co-Curricular Music Making

There is a wide choice of musical activities to become involved with which happen weekly. Our aim is to enjoy making music together of the highest quality through choirs, orchestras, ensembles and keyboard workshops.

Music Theory classes are available for those who wish to accelerate their learning in this area.

Music Lessons

Private 30 minute instrumental lessons are offered on the full range of orchestral instruments, guitars, drums, singing and piano. We have a highly qualified and dedicated team who teach within the school day on a rotating timetable.

We are a very active department who very much enjoy making music together.
